Hyster Forklift Warning Light Symbols Explained

A Hyster forklift shows engine, hydraulic and lift-system warnings that keep the truck safe and working. Here is what each one means.

Hyster Forklift dashboard warning lights and what they mean.

Engine, hydraulics and lifting

An internal-combustion Hyster watches oil pressure, coolant temperature and charging like any engine, and adds hydraulic and lift-mast warnings tied to the load-handling system. A mast or overload warning means the truck is protecting itself, so lighten or lower the load.

A red engine light means park on level ground, apply the brake and shut down.

Hyster forklift warning lights and meanings

The table below runs through the warning lights you are most likely to see on the Hyster Forklift, what each one means, and the sensible first move.

Coolant Temperature Warning

The engine is overheating, often from low coolant, a stuck thermostat or a failing fan. Stop safely, switch off and let it cool. Never open the cap while hot, and check coolant once cooled.

Oil Pressure Warning

Oil pressure has dropped too low to protect the engine, either low oil level or a pump/sensor issue. Treat it as urgent: stop, check oil, and get it looked at before driving further.

Battery / Charging Warning

The car is running on battery reserve because the alternator is not charging properly. Reduce electrical use and head to a shop; you may have limited driving time before it dies.

Glow Plug (Preheat)

Diesel preheat is active, or the light is flagging a heater fault. Wait for it to go out before cranking. A flashing light means get the glow system checked.

Hydraulic System Warning

A hydraulic system fault has been detected on the machine. Do not keep loading the hydraulics until the fault is found.

Hydraulic Oil Temp / Level

The hydraulic fluid level or temperature is out of range. Check the reservoir and top up; investigate overheating causes.

Air Filter Warning

The intake filter is due for cleaning or replacement. Clean or replace the air filter to restore airflow.

Fuel Filter / Water Warning

The fuel filter is restricted or the water separator needs draining. Attend to the filter before it starves the engine.

Water in Fuel

The separator has detected water in the fuel. Empty the separator bowl before driving on.

DPF / Particulate Filter

Soot has built up in the particulate filter. Drive at steady highway speed for 15-20 minutes to let it regenerate; do not keep it on short trips.

AdBlue / DEF Warning

The diesel exhaust fluid (AdBlue) is low, or the SCR system has a fault. Add DEF and, if the light stays, have the SCR system checked.

Service / Hour Meter

A maintenance interval has been reached. Book the scheduled maintenance.

Work Lights

The machine work lamps are on. Turn them off when not needed to save the battery.

Low Fuel Warning

The fuel level is low and near the reserve. Top up before the reserve runs out.

Daily checks keep it working

Service the air filter when its warning shows and drain the water separator on diesel trucks; both are quick jobs that prevent power loss and engine damage.

If several warnings appear at once on start-up, check the battery and connections before assuming multiple faults.

Your questions answered

  1. What does the hydraulic warning mean on a Hyster forklift?

It flags a problem in the hydraulic system that runs the lift, tilt and steering, most often low hydraulic oil, overheating after heavy continuous use, or a restricted filter. Stop lifting, lower any load, and check the hydraulic oil level and cooler. Working the hydraulics hot or low risks pump damage, so find the cause before carrying on.

  2. Why is the engine light red on my Hyster forklift?

On an internal-combustion Hyster a red engine warning usually means low oil pressure or overheating, either of which can ruin the engine fast. Park on level ground, set the brake, and shut it down. Check the oil level and coolant once it has cooled, and look for leaks. Do not keep working the truck, since a quick stop can save an expensive repair.

  3. What should I do about an overload warning on a forklift?

An overload or lift warning means the truck senses a load beyond its safe capacity for the current mast height and reach, and it may limit lifting to stay stable. Lower and lighten the load, and check the load chart for that truck and attachment. Overloading risks tipping, so treat the warning as a hard limit rather than a suggestion.
