What the brake light means

The red brake light shares one job with two triggers. Most often the parking brake is partly applied. If that is fully off and the light stays on, the brake fluid is low, which usually means worn pads or a leak in the system.

Brake system

The parking brake is on, or brake fluid is low. Release the parking brake; if it stays on, check the fluid and pads.

What to check first

  • Make sure the parking brake is fully released
  • Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir
  • Look for worn brake pads, which drop the fluid level
  • Watch for a soft or sinking pedal, a sign of a leak

When to stop driving

If the pedal feels soft, low, or sinks to the floor, do not keep driving. That points to a hydraulic leak or air in the system, and braking can fail. Have the car towed and inspected. A light that is only on because of low fluid from worn pads still needs prompt attention.

Your questions answered

  1. Why is the brake light on in my Honda Civic?

Usually the parking brake is not fully released, or the brake fluid is low from worn pads or a leak. Check the parking brake first, then the fluid.

  2. Is it safe to drive with the brake light on?

Only if the pedal feels firm and normal and the parking brake was the cause. A soft or sinking pedal means stop and have it towed.

  3. Does the brake light mean I need new pads?

It can. Worn pads let the fluid level fall, which turns the light on. Have the pads and fluid checked.
