John Deere Tractor Warning Lights and Meanings
How to read the warning lights on a John Deere tractor and act on them fast.

John Deere warning light symbols
Deal with red lights before amber ones. If a red light comes with a buzzer, stop straight away.
Engine oil pressure
Oil pressure has dropped too low. Stop the engine at once and check the oil.
Coolant temperature
The engine is overheating. Idle, then stop and let it cool before checking coolant.
Charging system
The alternator is not charging. Check the belt and connections; repair soon.
Hydraulic / transmission oil
Hydraulic pressure or level is low. Stop using hydraulics and check the oil.
DEF / exhaust fluid
Diesel exhaust fluid is low or faulty. Refill with clean DEF to avoid a power cut.
Exhaust filter (DPF)
The filter needs to regenerate or is blocked. Allow the regen to finish; avoid shutting down mid-cycle.
Preheat
Glow plugs are warming for a cold start. Wait for the light to go out before cranking.
Air filter
The air filter is restricted. Clean or replace the element.
Low fuel
Fuel is running low. Refuel before drawing air into the system.
Park brake
The park brake is applied. Release it before moving off.
The emissions lights
On newer John Deere tractors the DEF and DPF lights are the ones operators see most. Keep clean DEF topped up and let the filter finish a regen when it asks. Ignoring either leads to a step-by-step power reduction to force the issue.
Your questions answered
Which John Deere lights mean stop now?
Red oil pressure, high coolant temperature, and low hydraulic or transmission oil. Shut the engine down and check before continuing.
What happens if I ignore the DEF light?
The tractor reduces engine power in stages until you refill with clean diesel exhaust fluid.
Why does the exhaust filter light keep coming on?
Short, light-load work stops the filter from getting hot enough to clean itself. Let it complete a regen or run under load for a while.
